Authenticity Guarantee

Every piece is hand-selected, cleaned, and described using over 20 years of vintage experience. When a listing says a piece is vintage, it is vintage. If an item isn't as described, I'll refund you in full, including shipping.

Vintage Condition

Every piece here is pre-loved and often decades old, so expect gentle signs of age and use, like light scratches, softened plating or finish, small marks, or patina. That's part of each piece's history and charm, and nothing will look fresh off a showroom floor.

Anything beyond normal wear, such as chips, cracks, repairs or damage, is always pointed out in the description and shown in the photos. If an item arrives with a flaw I didn't mention, my return policy has you covered.

A Victorian romance with a ruby cross, a mysterious family secret and a cover so pretty it ended up in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. (Not this copy. This copy is available to you, which the Met's is not.)

This is Dariel: A Romance of Surrey by R.D. Blackmore, the author of Lorna Doone, published by Dodd, Mead and Company with a copyright of 1896-1897. The deep red cloth cover has a stunning gilt and dark green Celtic knotwork design with a jeweled cross, signed with the monogram of Alice Cordelia Morse, one of the great American book cover designers of the 1890s. A copy of this very cover design is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Inside are black and white illustrations, including the plate "Sûr Imar received us with a loving smile."

It's a lovely piece for a book collector, a fan of decorative publisher's bindings, or anyone who wants a shelf that looks like it belongs in an old library.

Condition: Good antique condition for a book over 125 years old. The cover is bright, with the gilt and green design still strong, and some spotting and light rubbing to the cloth. The top and bottom of the spine are frayed. The front inner hinge is cracked along the gutter, but the pages are still attached. Previous owners' names (Claudia Taylor Pendleton and Claudia Clara Pendleton) are written in purple ink inside the front cover, with a small pencil note on the facing page. Pages are toned with age. As with any old book, we haven't checked every page, so there may be other marks or notes we didn't spot. Please see all photos.
