Small enough for a pocket, with a whole lot of history worn into it. This antique R. Wallace & Sons silverplate snuff box has a hinged lid engraved in the Aesthetic style: an open fan at each end, leafy sprigs, and a scalloped center cartouche holding a flowing script monogram (it looks like a P). Lift the lid and the inside still glows with a warm gold wash.
The front rim is stamped R. WALLACE & SONS and SILVER SOLDERED, along with a pattern number. "Silver Soldered" is the mark Wallace used on its sturdy silverplated wares, so this box is silverplate, not sterling. R. Wallace & Sons of Wallingford, Connecticut used this name from 1871 to 1956, and the fan engraving points to the late 1800s or early 1900s.
It has clearly been carried and used, and it has been left unpolished, just as found. A sweet little pill box, stamp box, ring box or catch-all for a desk or dresser, and a nice find for tobacciana and antique silverplate collectors.
Condition: Used antique condition with flaws. There is a large dent in the bottom, which also shows as a raised area inside the box. The box is still functional: the hinge works and the lid opens and closes. It has not been polished and has dark tarnish, surface scratches and wear to the silverplate, with warm-toned base metal showing in places, mostly on the underside. The gold wash inside is worn. Please look closely at all photos, as they are part of the description.
