Vintage Condition

Every piece here is pre-loved and often decades old, so expect gentle signs of age and use, like light scratches, softened plating or finish, small marks, or patina. That's part of each piece's history and charm, and nothing will look fresh off a showroom floor.

Anything beyond normal wear, such as chips, cracks, repairs or damage, is always pointed out in the description and shown in the photos. If an item arrives with a flaw I didn't mention, my return policy has you covered.

Six young men, one painted backdrop, and a whole lot of attitude.

This is an antique tintype photograph on a thin iron plate, showing six young men posed together in a photographer's studio. Three stand in back and three sit in front, hands resting on each other's shoulders the way close friends do. They wear suits, vests and bow ties, and several sport straw boater hats. One man in front holds his hat on his knee.

Look closely at their lapels: several of the men wear ribbons or badges. That usually points to a special occasion, such as a club or lodge outing, a reunion, a picnic, a fair, or a political rally. The photographer's posing stand is visible behind the man at right, a nice detail of how these portraits were made.

  • Material: tintype (photographic image on a thin iron plate)
  • Era: c. 1885 to 1900, based on the clothing, boater hats and sleeve style
  • Includes: original printed paper sleeve with orange decorative border and pink back
  • Size: sleeve about 3.25" x 5"; plate about 3" x 4" (please see ruler photo)
  • Subjects: unidentified; no writing found on the plate back or sleeve

Condition

Fine crazing (crackle lines) across the image surface, most visible on the light clothing and the floor. Edge wear and small spots of oxidation along the plate edges, and the plate is slightly bent. The back is dark and plain with surface marks. The paper sleeve shows age toning, a creased lower corner and a few small spots. Honest wear for a photograph well over 100 years old.

Styling props shown in photos are not included.
