Primitive Vintage Kitchen Decor: Cutting Boards, Enamelware and More

Primitive Vintage Kitchen Decor guide header, Oddly Darling Vintage

The worn, hardworking tools of old farmhouse kitchens are some of the most loved vintage decor pieces right now. A scarred wooden cutting board or a chippy enamel pot brings warmth and story to a modern kitchen.

Vintage Cutting Boards

Old breadboards and cutting boards with handles, knife marks and a soft patina are favorites for leaning on counters and layering on walls. Look for solid hardwood, interesting shapes, and handles worn smooth by use. Avoid boards with deep cracks or splits.

Enamelware

Enamelware, also called graniteware, is metal coated in glassy enamel. Look for speckled blue, gray, green and white pieces, plus red- or black-rimmed white enamel. Coffee pots, pitchers, colanders and basins are especially popular. Chips are expected on old pieces, but heavy rust lowers value.

Other Primitive Kitchen Favorites

  • Crocks and stoneware jugs
  • Wooden dough bowls and rolling pins
  • Old kitchen utensils with wood or painted handles
  • Cast iron trivets and pans
  • Tin canisters, sifters and scales

Telling Old From New

Many primitive-style items are reproduced today. Genuine pieces show uneven, natural wear in places hands touched, old hardware, and patina that isn't uniform. Reproductions often look evenly "distressed" all over.

Decorating Tips

  • Lean a stack of cutting boards behind the stove or sink.
  • Use an enamel pitcher as a utensil holder or flower vase.
  • Fill a dough bowl with seasonal fruit or pinecones.
  • Mix old pieces with modern appliances for a warm, collected look.
