This vintage Chinese Satsuma-style pottery puppy figurine is a big, heavy pup with his front legs stretched out, rump up and tail curled over his back, ready to pounce on whatever you leave on the coffee table.

Every inch of him is decorated. He's glazed a golden yellow with a fine crackle, stippled all over with tiny red dots, then covered in hand-painted chrysanthemums, lotus blossoms and butterflies in pink, coral and lavender, with scrolling vines in black, oxblood and gold. Many of the outlines are raised (moriage) and gilded, so you can feel the pattern under your fingertip. He has a lavender nose, a gold-speckled muzzle, long floppy ears edged in coral, and black paws with gold swirl toes.

"Satsuma style" pottery borrows the look of Japan's famous Satsuma ware: crackled glaze, busy hand-painted flowers, raised enamel and lots of gold.
